North State Signs History

Early History

The history of North State Signs & Printing goes back over 30 years!  Steve & Sarah Webb, founders and owners of Snoopy’s Hot Dogs, opened a sign shop in 1984 as a Budget 1 Hour Sign Shop. The sign shop was one of the very first vinyl sign shops to open in the United States.

The advent of computer-generated vinyl signage opened the door to a whole new industry. Within a year the Webb family re-branded and afterward launched American Sign Shops to franchise their new concept. In a few short years, American Sign Shops had grown to more than 40 stores operating in several states. Sarah’s sister, Ruth Gill, left her manager’s post at Snoopy’s and took over the original American Sign Shop in 1987 becoming a fixture and an asset in the Raleigh Downtown area for many non-profits and businesses.  In 1997, Ruth had health setbacks and could not attend to the daily operations of the company.

In 2002 American Sign Shops merged and became a franchise store, Signs By Tomorrow.

Late History to Present

As the years have passed, Steve, Sarah, and Ruth reached the age of retirement.  Also, the shop left the franchise system in 2014 and ultimately closed.  They have pledged their support for Ruth’s son, Cyrus (Cy) Gill, and his new company with the commitment of being the first choice for individuals, churches, non-profit organizations, schools and businesses in the Raleigh-Durham’s area.  North State Signs, Inc., opened as a local entity without the constraints of a multi-franchise chain.  North State Signs & Printing has placed a high re-emphasis on high quality, accuracy, price, and outstanding customer satisfaction.

In order to maintain customer excellence, we make every attempt to know our customers by name, not customer number.  As a result, this sets us apart from the mega-online sign and print distributors.  We look forward to serving the Greater Raleigh area and beyond for many years to come. Many customers remember Ruth and her community support. We want to rededicate our commitment to customer service in the hope that we can deliver as she gave.  Further, we want to offer the best pricing for the quality and value at any other sign company.
